2019 CWA Contest SPECIAL AWARD winners

=====================================

01 AAFP CAT FRIENDLY PRACTICE® AWARD

Winner: Maggie Marton

Winning entry title: What is a Cat-Friendly Practice? Should my Cat go to One?

Winning entry link: https://ohmydogblog.com/2019/10/cat-friendly-practice/

Judge: Dr. Cindy Rigoni, DVM

Judge’s Comments: I liked the way it is written and the pictures.

02 CATALYST COUNCIL CONNECT TO CARE AWARD

Winner: Zachariah Atteberry

Winning entry title: Living With Aspergers: What Cats Have Taught Me About Hope, Opportunity and never Giving Up In The Face Of Bullying, Depression, and Suicide

Winning entry link: https://bit.ly/2HpawNm

Judge: Carol Bryant

Judge’s Comments: I selected this piece because it has the elements of story that everyone can relate to, and that is the universal need to feel loved and wanted. I found myself crying, smiling, and finally rejoicing in Zach’s journey. Depression and bullying is all too common these days, but Zach found a way to channel his angst and depression through his passion for cats. Zach’s story is well-told, beautifully executed, and I really felt moved by his words. Congratulations on this award and on being a warrior, Zach!

03 CWA COUNCIL OF DIRECTORS NEWCOMER CAT COMMUNICATIONS AWARD

Winner: Zachariah Atteberry

Winning entry title: Feral kitten taming guide and tips for spicy kittens

Winning entry link: https://bit.ly/3bz2GPj

Judge: Scott S. Black, CPPS

Judge’s Comments: This was a very difficult decision. After much deliberation, I kept going back to this entry. As a professional pet care provider I strive to be the best I can all day every day. That said, continuing education is critical to me. This entry detailed and defined so many wonderful and educational points to help a novice or pro understand feral cats and how to tame and socialize them. This was an easy to read and understand entry, and needs to be shared everywhere and anywhere to help feral cats worldwide. As mentioned, this was not an easy decision. Paws up to all the entrants, and congratulations to the entrant.

04 DR. JIM RICHARDS CORNELL FELINE HEALTH CENTER VETERINARY ISSUES AWARD

Winner: Helen Fitzsimons

Winning entry title: Tanya’s Comprehensive Guide to Feline Chronic Kidney Disease

Winning entry link: http://www.felinecrf.org

Judge: Dr. Jennifer L. Schori

Judge’s Comments: Tanya’s website for pet owners of cats suffering from CKD is clearly a labor of love. I was very impressed by the comprehensiveness of her website, her approachable way of writing for cat owners, and her careful use of high-quality professional resources from experts in the veterinary field to draw her information from. I hope she continues to update her website regularly as new information comes to light, and I wish her the best in her endeavors!

05 FEAR FREE PETS AWARD

Winner: Dawn White

Winning entry title: Getting Your Cat to the Vet: Benefits of a Fear Free Vet Visit

Winning entry link: http://bit.ly/2P7dGZO

Judge: Dr. Robin Downing, DVM

Judge’s Comments: While there were several very strong submissions for the CWA Fear Free Pets Award, this particular entry stood out for several reasons.  The author provided an excellent explanation of the Fear Free movement and basic Fear Free concepts.  The piece was nicely divided between delivery of information and then a back-and-forth interview. Finally, the embedded videos provided a visual reinforcement of the written words.  Overall, this really resonated with Fear Free principles and will serve as an excellent source of information for cat owners seeking a better veterinary experience for their cats.

06 FEAR FREE CAT ENRICHMENT AWARD

Winner: Tabitha Kucera

Winning entry title: Enrichment ideas for your cat

Winning entry link: https://www.thesprucepets.com/enrichment-ideas-for-your-cat-4588682

Judge: Samantha Martin

Judge’s Comments: I found her article to be easy to read with creative ideas for enrichment that I intend on Implementing myself.  Since I have about 24 cats that are currently out of work…This article has really inspired me to do some experimenting with the ideas presented in her entry.  Especially the ball pit!  Genius!

07 GOODNEWSFORPETS.com HUMAN-ANIMAL BOND AWARD

Winner: Katherine Kern

Winning entry title: Imperfectly perfect … together: The power of one cat’s love

Winning entry link: https://bit.ly/2UExSXl

Judge: Chloe DiVita

Judge’s Comments: First. Oh. My. Catness. Like, wow. This was hard. I ended up having to do a narrow down to 5, and then to 3, and have decided on the winner….drumroll…

Imperfectly perfect… together: The power of one cat’s love quickly pulls the audience into relating to the author, Momma Kat. Personal struggles are something everyone deals with, but the depth of pain that Kat felt was described with such clarity that it was hard not to just want to reach out hug her. To read how she started to how she was changed and affected by Bear to feel the pain she felt when she had to leave him to take care of herself and how he continues to support her, was so moving. She captured such a range of human animal bond and how it can grow and teach, and how it is a bond that is strong, not even distance or time can break it. This is a story I will remember in my heart, and thus, I’m awarding the Human-Animal Bond Award.

Seriously though, this was hard. Kudos to all entries!

08 CHRISTOPHER KNIGHT GROOMING AND FELINE SKIN CARE AWARD

Winner: Phillip Mlynar

Winning entry title: Grooming Your Cat—Do’s, Don’ts and Disasters

Winning entry link: https://catwriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Grooming_Dos_And_Donts.pdf

Judge: Erin Fenstermaker

Judge’s Comments: There were many worthy entrants in this category, and this was a hard decision to make.  I finally chose “Grooming Your Cat—Do’s Don’ts and Disasters” as the winner because it was equally informative, had a lot of practical advice that most cat owners could immediately put into practice, in addition to having a little punch of humor.  All of those factors made this a great read—congratulations!

09 KARI WINTERS RESCUE AND REHABILITATION AWARD

Winner: Beverly Garland

Winning entry title: Jugg: Cat Portait in Colored Pencil

Winning entry link: https://bit.ly/2HoZJTv

Judge: Dr. Julie Levy, DVM

Judge’s Comments: I just loved Beverly’s fresh approach to storytelling that blended art, compassion, and cat rescue. I was mesmerized by the time-lapse recording of a pencil-drawn portrait of rescue kitten Jugg taking form while the artist narrated her rescue story and intersped images of her recovery. It was an unexprected and delightful moment that had me smiling the entire time. (For the record, this other entry was a close second as a heartwarming story of love and loss pinned on the symbolism of a single white whisker. I could imagine this fiesty cat’s journey through life and the heartbreak of the moment the narrator released her at the end.

10 KITTEN CARE AND RESCUE/ADOPTION AWARD

Winner: Kate Basedow

Winning entry title: Helping Stray Cats With Kittens

Winning entry link: https://www.catwatchnewsletter.com/features/helping-stray-cats-with-kittens/

Judge: Shelley DelRocco

Judge’s Comments: It is very well written and includes great advice.  I felt all cat lovers and people that do TNR would benefit from it whether they are new to helping stray kittens and queens or have done it for many years. It also relates to people who just feed stray cats.   It reaches a wide audience.   Not only does it have the author’s viewpoints; but it also includes tips and recommendations from a dr. which makes it more creditable in my eyes. The visual layout of the article is also appealing and makes the article look more professional and more worth reading. It is broken out into sub-topics and makes it easy to read and understand. You can tell that there was research and time put into this article.

11 KUYKENDALL IMAGE AWARD

Winner: Marjorie Dawson

Winning entry title: Chenzou At The Cat Cafe

Winning entry link: http://bit.ly/DashKittenPhoto_5

Judge: Stacy LeBaron

Judge’s Comments: This photo really grabbed my attention. This is a really lovely, evocative image that embodies the elegance of cats.  There is a calmness to the photo that reaches me in a way that we don’t see often.  I felt at peace with the image.

12 LORIE HUSTON HEALTH AWARD

Winner: Helen Fitzsimons

Winning entry title: Tanya’s Comprehensive Guide to Feline Chronic Kidney Disease

Winning entry link: http://www.felinecrf.org

Judge: Dr. Lynn Bahr

Judge’s Comments: Renal disease is, unfortunately, a common problem affecting cats worldwide. Tanya’s Guide is an extensive resource, chocked full of important information, that is written to help owners navigate their way through this difficult diagnosis. It is well organized, technically accurate, and answers all of the questions owners might have with regard to their cat’s kidney problems. Tanya’s Guide is a good resource for veterinarians to refer their clients to as well. This website leaves no stone unturned and it is a very informative for anyone that has a cat with kidney disease. Best of all, it is written in an optimistic way, giving owners hope and encouragement during a time when they might be feeling scared, worried, and sad. I would recommend this site to anyone that has questions about their cat’s kidney disease.

13 PET SITTERS INTERNATIONAL (PSI) PROFESSIONAL PET CARE AWARD

Winner: Zachariah Atteberry

Winning entry title: Hiring a Professional Pet Sitter Effortlessly And Effectively

Winning entry link: https://bit.ly/3bBimRW

Judge: Joette White

Judge’s Comments: While I don’t think this process is effortless, as suggested by the title, I felt the author gave great detail and resources to help find the right PROFESSIONAL pet sitter to fit just about any need.  I felt the article brought up good points about the difference between a professional and a hobbyist pet sitter and why sometimes paying more…means getting more.  Why should you hire a professional Pet Sitter?  Because you want to come home to a healthy, happy cat and you want peace of mind knowing your kitty was left in good hands.  Our pets are our babies and our home is our personal, intimate space…why trust all that to anyone less than a professional!!

14 NANCY MARANO SENIOR CAT WELL-BEING AWARD

Winner: Deborah Camp

Winning entry title: Mali the Walker, Bernie the Stalker

Winning entry link: https://tinyurl.com/wxjvcgw

Judge: Peter J. Wolf

Judge’s Comments: Camp’s seemingly effortless account of the evolving relationship between senior cat Mali and three-year-old Bernie (“it seems to flow with predictability and without rancor”) drew me in from the outset: “She arrived on our porch one morning— hungry, bitter and pregnant.” As somebody with a soft-spot for senior cats myself, I found myself rooting for Mali. And as a writer, I found myself envious of Camp’s knack for prose that’s sweet without being sentimental:

“Daily, at precise times, like senior fitness walkers who ambulate local malls, she’ll arise from her lounging area and embark upon a preordained course. The circuit will wind behind particular tables and chairs; she’ll pad down a well-worn path leading to Michael’s office, and then upstairs to mine. The stroll rarely changes, and you can usually set your watch to match her promenade.”

Surely, I’m not the only reader who’s eager to hear what happened next!

15 SLEEPYPOD® CAT SAFETY AWARD

Winner: Phillip Mlynar

Winning entry title: How to Navigate a Natural Disaster With Your Cat

Winning entry link: https://bit.ly/2uyV3aX

Judge: Briony Scott

Judge’s Comments: I picked How to Navigate a Natural Disaster With Your Cat.  As the owner of a pet sitting company and living in a hurricane zone, I’d love more people to be prepared.  When hurricanes do roll around, there are so many unprepared people and so many lost or dumped animals.  Cats especially tend to be left at home so I think this is a very important read.

16 PIONEER PET BEHAVIORAL TRAINING AWARD

Winner: Zachariah Atteberry

Winning entry title: Feral Kitten Taming Guide and Tips for Spicy kittens

Winning entry link: https://bit.ly/3bz2GPj

Judge: Sterling Davis

Judge’s Comments: I chose this one because it was packed with information, the title makes you want to see what it’s about, and there were even some things that I didn’t know in there.  I liked all the entries but that one stood out for me.

17 WORLD’S BEST® CAT LITTER-ARY AWARD

Winner: Shirley Rousseau Murphy

Winning entry title: Cat Chase the Moon A Joe Grey Mystery

Winning entry link: (Available at: https://amzn.to/2DhHroT)

Judge: Felissa Elfenbein

Judge’s Comments: Shirley Rousseau Murphy is a storyteller that speaks to young and old alike with this captivating mystery. From cover to cover, I did not want to put this book down. A great mix of feline facts and fiction, I was invested in the characters, both human and feline.

This book is a stand-alone winner and, at the same time, one that makes me want to read the entire series. I did not feel like I missed out on not having read any books in the series before this, while at the same time, I want to learn more about all of the characters involved.

History of the CWA Communication Contest

In November, 1994, the newly formed Cat Writers’ Association, held its first Communications Contest. Founding member, the late visionary cat artist Karen Kuykendall, designed the coveted Muse Medallion™ and was also the first recipient of a Muse.

Qualified entries** in the Regular Categories are evaluated by professional CWA members who volunteer their time and expertise to serve as Contest judges. Judges evaluate all entries against an objective standard of excellence – no “grading on the curve!” Certificates of Excellence are awarded to entries that earn an average score of 90 or higher. The Certificate of Excellence winner with the highest score in each Category is the winner of the Muse Medallion™ for that Category.

The generosity of CWA’s corporate and private sponsors makes possible our Special Awards. Judged by experts in their fields who are not CWA members, these prestigious Awards honor published work that best exemplifies each Award’s topic and purpose.

Each year, Contest winners are announced, and Awards presented, at the gala Awards Banquet, the high point of CWA’s Annual Conference.  View PAST contest awards winners here!

Today, the spirit of excellence still lives on in the Muse Medallion™. That first Contest in 1994 included just 5 Regular Categories and 10 sponsored Special Awards. Over the years, the Contest has expanded and broadened, including dozens of Regular Categories and Special Awards. For the latest Contest, covering work published during 2018, the set of Regular Categories was completely reimagined and redesigned, bringing the CWA Communications Contest solidly into the twenty-first century.

###

CWA is grateful to all of our sponsors for their continued support of CWA’s  Communications Contest and Annual Conference. Without our Sponsors, the Conference and these Awards would not be possible.

If you would like to explore sponsorship opportunities, such as sponsoring a CWA Special Award,  and reach over 260 professional cat journalists and their readers, please email CWA President, Deb Barnes for further information.
